Dr. Tsukahara has worked with many couples since the 1980’s, and she brings particular expertise to those who are struggling with ADD-related concerns. This includes those couples in which one or both partners has ADD or where a child has been diagnosed with ADD and the parents are conflicted regarding how to manage the child.
Regardless of the reasons that bring a couple in for therapy, Dr. T’s primary focus is on creating a safe environment in which clear, direct communication can occur. She draws from the research of John M. Gottman, Ph.D. and strongly encourages couples to purchase his book, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work (1999) to use in conjunction with therapy. Additional strategies Dr. T uses in her work with couples include:
-
Relaxation techniques to manage stress
-
Communication and listening skills in the context of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
-
Identification of multigenerational patterns
-
Conflict resolution
-
Identifying and managing the impact of ADD on the couple’s daily life, including difficulties with intimacy
-
Managing conflicts over money (e.g., living on a budget; getting out of debt)
-
Helping couples to establish healthy boundaries
-
Parenting skills
