Comments about Testing and ADHD

Although psychological and neurocognitive testing are not required to make a diagnosis of ADHD, testing provides information about other important aspects of the individual. For example, it can be extremely important to determine whether there is a learning disability such as dyslexia present. Additional testing is often required for those seeking accommodations for academic purposes or professional exams. It can also be very helpful for those considering a major educational pursuit such as college or a graduate degree or a career change. Testing reveals strengths that one can learn to use in compensating for cognitive weaknesses.

PREPARING FOR TESTING (Adults and Children)

  1. Get a good night’s sleep but avoid sleep medications unless they are taken daily.
  2. Do not consume caffeine, sugary beverages, or take stimulant medications the morning of the testing appointment.
  3. Bring stimulant medication to the appointment if a dose would be taken during that time period. The psychologist may want to administer some tests before and after medication.
  4. Dress comfortably but bring a light sweater since the office can be chilly.
  5. Feel free to bring a snack.
  6. Bring reading glasses, if needed.
  7. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early.
  8. Bring payment (check or credit card). Keep in mind the 2.5% charge for use of credit cards.
  9. Plan to turn your cell phone off completely.
