Getting into an exercise routine can be one of the hardest behaviors to change. Keeping in mind that one of my themes for the month of May is that we can see big results through small changes, today’s tip will focus on small changes that get you moving. Here are Ten Tips for Becoming More Active:
- Any is better than none! Look for small ways to introduce more activity into your day. Use the 5-Minute Rule to help you overcome the inertia hurdle. For example, “I only have to walk for five minutes.”
- Take the Stairs! Establish a rule for yourself: “If it is 3 floors or less, I’m taking the stairs.” As three floors become easier, add a floor. If the escalator is your only option, walk instead of standing still.
- Park Farther Away! When you run errands, park at the far end of the parking lot to get in more steps.
- 10,000 Steps! Buy a simple pedometer that just counts your steps. Start with a small goal of 2000 steps per day. Gradually work your way up to 10,000 steps per day.
- Get a Buddy! Find a friend or neighbor who shares your desire to get moving and set walking or running dates. You are much more likely to get out of bed if you know your friend is about to ring the doorbell!
- Avoid High Priced Solutions! A common mistake is to believe one has to join a gym or buy expensive equipment in order to get in shape. The truth is that most gym memberships go unused, and stationary bicycles morph into clothes racks. All you really need is a decent pair of walkers or running shoes.
- Walk the Talk! Pace while talking on the phone.
- Weights While Watching! Keep some free weights by the television and do a few repetitions while catching up on the news.
- Stretch While Waiting! When you pop something in the microwave, use those micro-moments to loosen up some muscles. Or jog in place.
- Sign Up for a Short Race! Many scheduled events now let walkers participate. Signing up now gives you a goal to work towards. The payoff is even better when the race is a fund-raiser for a good cause.
Get creative and look for more fun ways to get some extra movement into your day. Share your ideas with me so I can pass them along to others. Meanwhile, have some fun while you get moving!
