From Papelitos to Your To Do List

Last time I shared with you some tips for making the Master To Do List more ADD-friendly. This week, I’ll build on that by addressing how to manage all those little scraps of paper with your to-do’s on them! I love my Spanish-speaking client’s term - “papelitos”.

I sometimes wonder how I ever managed before the invention of sticky notes. They are the ideal solution for papelitos.

  1. Buy lots of sticky pads and pens, placing them in every room in your home, including the bathroom!
  2. Put a sticky pad & pen in your car, your purse, and your shirt pocket.
  3. When you think of a to-do but your master list isn’t handy, write it on a sticky note.
  4. Stick the note to your index finger or some other place where you cannot ignore it.
  5. Have one place where all sticky notes end up (e.g., inside the cover of your master list notebook; a corner of your desk; your bathroom mirror; your computer monitor). This step is essential! Check out the photo to see where my stickies often hitch a ride to the corner of my desk.
  6. When possible, take the 2-minute Challenge and enter the task directly onto your master list.
  7. When you have a few minutes, use the 5-minute Rule to enter several stickies onto your Master List at one time. You can also use the 5-minute rule to begin transferring those papelitos onto your List.

The big value of this strategy, of course, is that stickies stay put, especially if you spend a bit more money to purchase Post-its (and no, I do not own 3M stock). There is also a heavy-duty version that sticks to most surfaces. These are especially good for the car.
